The enlarged Oxford-Dante, editedbythe great Dante scholar Edward Moore (1835-1916), first published in 1894. It is the first modern edition of Dante's works. Moore edited the text on the basis of the Commediapublished by Karl Witte in 1862. Paget Jackson Toynbee (1855-1932), future secretary of the Oxford Dante Society in the period 1916-1928, is responsible for the extensive Indice dei nomi propri e delle cose notabili contenute nelle opere di Dante.Moore founded, in 1876, the Oxford Dante Society; his numerous essays devoted to the Florentine poet were collected, between 1896 and 1917, in the four-volume Studies in Dante.
