Three volumes, 16° (107 x 67mm). xiv, [2], 220; [4], 212; [4], 216 pages. The title of each cantica printed in gothic type. Contemporary uniform binding in hazel calf; covers framed within double gilt fillet. Spine with five small raised bands; author's and translator's names and volume numbering in gold on double lettering-piece. Marbled pastedowns and flyleaves, board edges decorated with narrow frieze. Marbled edges. Preserved, together with the three-volume first issue of the edition in a grey cloth box, title and imprint on black morocco label ‘Dante The Vision First & Second Issue 1814'. Waterstained the upper cover of the second volume. A very good copy, a few insignificant spots.

Provenance: on the front pastedown of each volume ex-libris with the motto 'nihil utile quod non honestum'; Livio Ambrogio collection.



Second issue of the English translation by Henry Francis Cary (1772-1844), identified by a few minor variants in the foliation and the presence on the title-page of the names of the publishers ‘Taylor and Hessey', in place of the formula ‘Printed for the author'.
