With nine engraved plates, including the portraits of Foscolo and Dante, and the maps of Hell, Purgatory and Paradise. Uniformly bound Contemporary in gilt-tooled hazel morocco, on the spines title and volume numbering in gilt lettering. Edges gilt. A very good copy.

The edition of the Commedia with the commentary by Ugo Foscolo (1778-1827), written during his exile in London in the years 1816-27, and here presented in its complete version. The first part had appeared in 1825 in London and later in 1827 in Lugano. The complete edition was edited by another illustrious Italian exiled: Giuseppe Mazzini (1805-1872). The first volume contains the Discorso sul testo e su le opinioni diverse prevalenti intorno alla storia e alla emendazione critica della ‘Commedia' di Dante. With a beautiful portrait of Foscolo, engraved by John Henry Robinson (1796-1871).
